The Assistant Instructor rating is the next step after becoming a Divemaster along the scuba instructor pathway. It allows you to collect valuable teaching experience, practice briefings, teach academics, and conduct in-water training.
Candidate Prerequisites:
- Minimum Age: 18 years old
- Medically fit for diving and able to pass SSI Pro water fitness evaluation
- Minimum 60 logged open water dives, totaling at least 40 or more hours
- Have the following active status SSI certifications or an equivalent from a recognized training agency:

The Assistant Instructor rating is the next step after becoming a Divemaster along the scuba instructor pathway. It allows you to collect valuable teaching experience, practice briefings, teach academics, and conduct in-water training.
If you want to further your career as a dive professional, you can finish the Instructor Training Course, pass the Instructor Evaluation, and become an Open Water Diving Instructor.
Candidate Prerequisites:
- Minimum Age: 18 years old
- Minimum 60 logged open water dives, totaling at least 40 or more hours
- Have the following active status SSI certifications or an equivalent from a recognized training agency:
- Divemaster
Duration:
- Recommended hours for completion is 35-42 hours.
- Class dates and times will vary depending on facility availability and conditions at open water training sites.
Upon completion, active status SSI Assistant Instructors May conduct the following programs:
- Scuba Explorers
- Try Scuba
- Scuba Skills Update
- Perfect Buoyancy
In addition to the duties performed by an SSI Divemaster, active status Assistant Instructors may also:
- Teach the Open Water Diver Academic and Pool/Confined Water Sessions (except for emergency ascent skills) under the direct supervision of an active status open water instructor.
- Directly supervise and evaluate surface skills during open water training dives for the Open Water Diver program under the direct supervision of an active status open water instructor.
- Register to become a specialty instructor for certain SSI Specialty programs.
- Enroll in the Instructor Training Course (ITC)
*Purchase includes all courseware and required materials from SSI.
*All additional expenses related to dive fees, air fills, and additional travel expenses are the responsibility of the individual candidates.
